Sustainability matters a lot to Katja. She focuses a large part of her sustainability activities around her house in the countryside. For example, Katja collects rainwater in a 5,000-litre cistern for watering the garden. “We also use green electricity and gas at home and we had new windows fitted last year to save energy,” says Katja.

3 sustainability tips from Katja Böttcher

Use your consumer power

“Our demand determines supply – that’s something we should all be aware of.” On one hand, we carry responsibility as consumers, but on the other, we also have a great deal of power through what we consume and don’t consume. Recycling, repairing and sharing can be good alternatives to buying new things.

Have fun upcycling

Katja’s big passion revolves around second-hand and upcycled products. For example, she owns backpacks made from old airbags. “I recently came across bags made from old fire hoses, air mattresses and aircraft life jackets. They’re all things that you don’t see every day, and that’s exactly my thing!”

Enjoy regional produce

If you want a really convenient way of ensuring that your food is seasonal, regional and packaging-free, Katja also recommends subscribing to an organic vegetable box scheme.
