The strong solution for when it needs to be easy

DeltaFil glass ionomer cement fillings – THE alternative to amalgam

Impressive results.
Easy handling

Filling materials must meet special requirements, especially in paediatric dentistry and gerodontology, as well as for people with physical and mental disabilities. As a glass ionomer cement filing, DeltaFil offers a strong solution in these cases and an ideal alternative to amalgam:

DeltaFil’s excellent flexural strength and wear resistance, which is the result of its elastomeric micelle technology (EMT), plus the fact that it is easy to handle without any need for complete dryness make it perfect for needs-specific restorations. Equally impressive is the range of shades specially adapted for primary teeth and teeth that have been bleached or exhibit significant signs of age-related discolouration. Together with its other properties, DeltaFil’s outstanding biocompatibility and pleasant working consistency make for happy patients.

Capsule version expected to be available as of Q3/2025

DeltaFil – a practical alternative to amalgam

Glass ionomer cement fillings offer advantages over light-curing bulk-fill composites that make them indispensable as an amalgam alternative.

Amalgam had been the standard material for treating carious lesions in the posterior region for roughly 100 years but, as of 1 January 2025, it is generally no longer used or only in limited cases for dental treatments in the European Union – the impact on global treatment with amalgam remains to be seen. So what alternatives are there to amalgam?

There’s no one amalgam substitute but, in addition to classic composites, self-adhesive glass ionomer cement filling materials like DeltaFil offer a particularly flexible and straightforward solution and an alternative to amalgam where isolation is difficult and patient cooperation is limited.

User friendly

  • Ideal when isolation is difficult
  • Absolute isolation is not needed
  • Self-adhesive – no bonding necessary
  • Low susceptibility to errors in treatment – minimal treatment steps
  • Unlimited setting depth – no light-curing required

Patient friendly

  • Biocompatible – no monomers in the glass ionomer cement filling
  • Ideal for restricted patient cooperation and difficult-to-access cavities
  • Reduced time outlay for overall treatment – ideal for paediatric dentistry and gerodontology
  • Ideal for high caries risk thanks to remineralisation-promoting fluoride release

Small micelles with a big effect

Micelles are spherical aggregates that form spontaneously in polar solvents. They consist of molecules that have an amphiphilic character. This causes the molecules to combine to form a spherical structure, with their hydrophilic heads pointing outwards, facing the polar solvent, and their hydrophobic tails pointing inwards.

This elastomeric micelle technology (EMT) makes DeltaFil an innovative glass ionomer cement filling that is exceptionally stable and easy to handle, in a similar way to composites, while at the same minimising the spread of cracks in the material.

DeltaFil significantly outperforms the competition

As a glass ionomer cement filling, DeltaFil not only improves the resistance of restorations through the dispersion of elastomeric micelles, but also the clinically relevant flexural strength and fracture toughness. Preclinical data confirms DeltaFil’s superiority in this regard over competing products.

The fracture toughness of a material is an important parameter and assesses how well a material can withstand the formation and spread of cracks. It measures how much energy a material can absorb before it breaks. Glass ionomer cement fillings with DeltaFil demonstrated the highest fracture toughness when compared with tested competitor products.

Flexural strength indicates how much force can be exerted on a material before it breaks. In dentistry it serves as a decisive factor in assessing the durability and stability of a filling material. Here too, DeltaFil delivers outstanding results in comparison to the competitor products tested.

Abrasion behaviour describes the wear of a material due to mechanical friction, during chewing or teeth grinding, for example, and is also an important parameter in the evaluation of the durability of a product. DeltaFil has a significantly lower abrasion volume than all other materials tested. This is indicative of the glass ionomer cement filling’s high wear resistance.

FAQs about DeltaFil

As a glass ionomer cement filling, DeltaFil is the ideal solution when things have to be simple. That’s because, unlike light-curing bulk-fill composites, it does not require complete isolation. The fact that it works even in moist conditions considerably reduces the time patients have to spend with their mouth open. That’s an absolute plus point, especially when it comes to children, the elderly, and people with physical or mental disabilities. What’s more, the DeltaFil range of shades is specially adapted to paediatric dentistry and gerodontology: in addition to the Vita shades A1, A2, A3 and A4, the range of shades also includes White for primary teeth or bleached teeth and Dark for older people or very discoloured teeth. The fluoride release has also proven advantageous for high caries risks, which is particularly relevant for this patient group.

Used as an alternative to amalgam, glass ionomer cements like DeltaFil offer a number of advantages over classic composites. DeltaFil is a flexible and simple solution, especially when isolation is difficult and cooperation limited. That’s because restorative treatment with self-adhesive glass ionomer cement reduces the entire treatment duration: there is no need for complete isolation with a full rubber dam, no requirement for bonding or light-curing regardless of setting depth, and limited treatment steps mean low susceptibility to errors when working with DeltaFil – all in all an ideal alternative to amalgam.

Elastomeric micelle technology (EMT) makes DeltaFil an innovative glass ionomer cement with exceptional stability. The micelles incorporated into the material minimise the formation of cracks. This means the DMG-developed and patented technology increases stability and makes for particularly straightforward modelling, similar to that of composites.

DeltaFil is a conventional glass ionomer cement without monomers, which enables it to wow with its exceptional biocompatibility. This means, for one thing, that no adhesive is required as a bonding agent. It also means there is no risk of loose monomers ending up in the pulp, the dentine or the saliva and potentially triggering allergic reactions in your patients.

Other system components

Coating
DeltaFil Coat is a light-curing, TPO- and MMA-free protective varnish for glass ionomer cement fillings. It may optionally be applied at the end of the treatment and protects the glass ionomer cement from drying out and from becoming contaminated with moisture. The coating also ensures optimum surface quality and lustre, significantly reducing the need for fine polishing and improving the aesthetics of the restoration.

Conditioner

DeltaFil Conditioner is a polyacrylic acid solution for removing the smear layer after preparation and conditioning the cavity. This optimises the bond between the DeltaFil glass ionomer cement filling and the tooth structure, thus promoting the durability of the restoration through optimum retention.

The ideal solution for every preference

For classic, cost-effective treatment, DMG also offers the tried-and-tested Handmix version of DeltaFil.

The Handmix version has not yet been approved for areas subject to occlusal loads.
